5 Easy Steps To Avoid Razor Burn And Ingrown Hair

1. Razor should always be clean and sharp. For electric shavers make sure the head is free of hair.

2. Shave in the most comfortable direction for you. Men have differing hair growth patterns, learn to know your own. Using the free hand to manipulate the skin can assist a closer shave.

3. Shaving after a shower will ensure a softened beard but most men prefer to shave before a shower. Either rinse the face with warm to hot water or place a pre-heated face cloth on the beard for a couple of minutes to prepare the skin.

4. MOST IMPORTANT; after shaving apply a moisturizing cream such as an after shave balm or simply a good moisturizer such as Oil of Olay.

5. If after these steps you continue to suffer from razor burn rashes as I did, then try an electric shaver. I had to convert to one 12 years ago and have never looked back. However I do continue to use moisturizing cream every day and this works great for me.

Footnote: A Dermatologist told me many years ago (when only double edged razors were available) that razors shave too closely. This actually pulls and cuts the hair so that it settles below the skin. This can lead to ingrowing hair if the individual hair does not grow straight outward. I had this problem for years until I changed to an electric shaver.

I personally have had the best experience with the rotating head style but as men have differing hair growth patterns, I remain open to what is best for each individual.
